How to Beat the Demon Vanguard (Tutorial Boss)

Welcome to the Rainswept Outpost. If you are a veteran of Demon’s Souls, the hulking gray mass standing between you and the rest of the game will look immediately familiar. However, unlike the 2009 original where death was the expected outcome, Dark Souls: Archthrones requires you to kill the Demon Vanguard to access the Nexus of Embers1.

This fight is not just a nostalgia trip; it is a rigorous “gear check” designed to ensure you understand the mod’s revamped combat mechanics before letting you loose into the five Archthrones.

The Setup: Preparation and Mechanics

Before you traverse the fog wall, you must understand that Archthrones does not play exactly like Dark Souls III. The developers have implemented a “Deflection” system akin to Sekiro, and this boss is your first mandatory exam.

Recommended Loadout

  • Class: The Knight or Mercenary classes are ideal for their 100% physical block shields or high dexterity, respectively.
  • Items: Firebombs are highly effective if you chose them as a starting gift, as demons are historically weak to fire damage.

The Combat Shift: Deflection vs. Rolling

While you can dodge the Vanguard’s attacks, his massive hitbox and tracking often catch panic-rolls. The optimal strategy is to utilize the new Perfect Block mechanic. By tapping block (L1/LB) right as the axe connects, you negate all damage and stamina loss while damaging the boss’s invisible posture meter3.

Note: If you are struggling with the timing, refer to our Combat Mechanics Guide to master Deflection and Guard Counters.

Timing is key: A well-timed block creates an opening for a devastating Guard Counter.

Phase Breakdown and Attack Patterns

The Demon Vanguard is a physical powerhouse. He does not have a complex Phase 2 magical transformation, but his aggression increases as his health bar depletes.

1. The Vertical Chop

The boss raises his greataxe high above his head. This has a long wind-up.

  • The Counter: Do not roll early. Wait for the downward swing to start, then dodge to the side (left or right). Rolling backward usually results in getting caught by the shockwave.

2. The Horizontal Sweep

He swings the axe across the ground in a wide arc.

  • The Counter: This is the easiest move to Deflect. Tap block as the axe approaches you. If successful, follow up immediately with a heavy attack to trigger a Guard Counter.

3. The Butt Slam (Flying Drop)

The classic Demon’s Souls move. The Vanguard flies into the air and drops straight down, creating an AOE shockwave.

  • The Counter: Unlock your camera immediately and sprint away. Do not try to block this; it will break your guard and likely one-shot you.

Strategic Tactics: How to Win

Strategy A: The “Hugging” Method (Safe)

If you aren’t confident in your parry timings yet, the safest place to be is directly behind the boss.

  1. Stick to his right leg (the side without the axe).
  2. Circle strafe constantly.
  3. When he swings, he will often miss you entirely.
  4. Get 1-2 hits in, then wait for stamina to regenerate.
  5. Warning: Watch for the butt slam. If his feet leave the ground, roll away twice.

Strategy B: The Deflection Method (Fast)

For a faster kill, stand your ground face-to-face.

  1. Bait his horizontal swings.
  2. Deflect the hit.
  3. Perform a Guard Counter (Heavy Attack after block).
  4. This deals massive poise damage, eventually staggering him for a critical riposte.

Rewards and Loot

Upon defeating the Demon Vanguard, you will receive a rush of souls and a specific boss soul item. A bonfire will appear, allowing you to warp to the Nexus of Embers5.

  • Item Drop: Soul of the Demon Vanguard6.
  • Key Item: Grey Demon’s Soul.

Do not consume the Boss Soul. Like in the base game, this soul can be used for Transposition later. Once you locate the transposition kiln (or Ludleth’s equivalent), this soul can be crafted into a heavy strength weapon ideal for flattening enemies in the War-Torn Village.

Where to Go Next?

Defeating the Vanguard is the key to opening the world. Once you light the bonfire, you will travel to the Nexus. From there, we recommend visiting the War-Torn Village first, as it acts as the closest equivalent to a “Level 1” area.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I skip the Demon Vanguard?

No. Unlike the original Demon’s Souls tutorial where dying progresses the story, defeating the Vanguard is mandatory in Archthrones to access the Nexus and level up.

What is the weakness of the Demon Vanguard?

The Vanguard is weak to Fire and Slash damage. If you have Firebombs or Charcoal Pine Resin, use them now. He is resistant to blunt strike damage.

Why does my game crash after the cutscene?

If your game crashes immediately after beating the boss or triggering the cutscene, it is likely an issue with your memory hook installation. Ensure you have properly downpatched to v1.15. Check our Installation Guide for the correct file setup.

Can I summon help for this fight?

No. The Rainswept Outpost is a tutorial zone, and multiplayer features (White Sign Soapstone) are generally not available until you reach the Nexus and purchase the item.
